Event I: Joyce Yu-Jean Lee

On Wednesday, November 15th I attended the Joyce Yu-Jean Lee Art lecture. Joyce gave a presentation on her life, past education, past artworks, current art, and future art she is working on. Her story was one of resilience and passion. During her presentation she mentioned that political turmoil, and tragedy really spark her creativity. Fashion marketing and media statistics was her original major but after 9/11, one of her friends had perished in tower one and she recalled "studying fashion marketing was the responsible thing to do, but 9/11 was a reflection time in my life to reevaluate my life goal and see what I would be proud of leaving behind if I were to die the next day." So, she immediately began her journey to become an artist (her true passion) and started taking night classes while working full time in NYC. After graduating she decided to go to grad school at MICA in Baltimore for painting but ultimately left as a video artist. She is now teaching part time at J

Data Visualization is Communication for Dumbies

Data visualization is quick, to the point and meaningful. This is the most timeless form of communication. Now and days, digital designers are the new editors in chief of newspapers. This is the future of relaying facts and news. There is a possibility that soon print journalism will die out, but data visualization. Jer Thorp, one of the Software Artist mentioned that his deepest interest lies between data and culture. The idea that a digital design can present revelations took my head for a spin. That's a pretty purposeful and meaningful job/ way of life. This is the newest and trendiest form of communication. This is the future of fact relaying. There is a possibility that soon print journalism will die out. I think this form of art is the future to communication. Developing such technology and communication through digital design going to take over.

Visual Analysis

Viewing this piece, the first element that catches your eye is the large portrait of Lady Gaga from her famous Born this Way cover art... but something is different about it. It isn't a tradition flat photo, it looks like it was painted. The classic black and white photo with her iconic red lip is altered in such a way that it looks like it was created with ink. Coming out of the left side of Lady Gaga's head there is a winding multi color red tube looking path winding down the page. The composition of this piece includes predominately the golden triangle, radiating and leading lines. The colors that immediately catch my eye is that red path that matches Lady Gaga's lips, next is the soft pinks and blue in the back, then the stark black and white bottom corners. It is a quite complementary scheme. The piece is composed in such a way that once my eyes leave Lady Gaga, they follow the path winding down and notice the trickling printed cutouts of trending styles and memes. By
