Event II: Art Party

Image
After attending the Art party in the Merlot house, I got to see some of the Life Drawing class’ work. Walking around I saw all of the student’s homework assignments. A friend of mine, Lucy Fanto is currently in that class and noted that the class provides an amazing new perspective in art. “Chris is the most experienced knowledgeable art teacher I have had here, with all the courses available this one seemed like the best fit for my intended major of painting.” She noted that the most challenging part of the course is making sure that the homework is up to par with the rest of her projects. She noted that setting aside time for this homework specially is extremely important so she can actually put her full effort in. I was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face; a student had painted a portrait of a beauty blogger that I have been watching for years by the name of Desi Perkins. It was cool to see her pull inspiration from a makeup artist. Desi Perkins had created a Halloween

Event I: Joyce Yu-Jean Lee

On Wednesday, November 15th I attended the Joyce Yu-Jean Lee Art lecture. Joyce gave a presentation on her life, past education, past artworks, current art, and future art she is working on. Her story was one of resilience and passion. During her presentation she mentioned that political turmoil, and tragedy really spark her creativity. Fashion marketing and media statistics was her original major but after 9/11, one of her friends had perished in tower one and she recalled "studying fashion marketing was the responsible thing to do, but 9/11 was a reflection time in my life to reevaluate my life goal and see what I would be proud of leaving behind if I were to die the next day." So, she immediately began her journey to become an artist (her true passion) and started taking night classes while working full time in NYC. After graduating she decided to go to grad school at MICA in Baltimore for painting but ultimately left as a video artist. She is now teaching part time at J

Data Visualization is Communication for Dumbies

Data visualization is quick, to the point and meaningful. This is the most timeless form of communication. Now and days, digital designers are the new editors in chief of newspapers. This is the future of relaying facts and news. There is a possibility that soon print journalism will die out, but data visualization. Jer Thorp, one of the Software Artist mentioned that his deepest interest lies between data and culture. The idea that a digital design can present revelations took my head for a spin. That's a pretty purposeful and meaningful job/ way of life. This is the newest and trendiest form of communication. This is the future of fact relaying. There is a possibility that soon print journalism will die out. I think this form of art is the future to communication. Developing such technology and communication through digital design going to take over.

Visual Analysis

Viewing this piece, the first element that catches your eye is the large portrait of Lady Gaga from her famous Born this Way cover art... but something is different about it. It isn't a tradition flat photo, it looks like it was painted. The classic black and white photo with her iconic red lip is altered in such a way that it looks like it was created with ink. Coming out of the left side of Lady Gaga's head there is a winding multi color red tube looking path winding down the page. The composition of this piece includes predominately the golden triangle, radiating and leading lines. The colors that immediately catch my eye is that red path that matches Lady Gaga's lips, next is the soft pinks and blue in the back, then the stark black and white bottom corners. It is a quite complementary scheme. The piece is composed in such a way that once my eyes leave Lady Gaga, they follow the path winding down and notice the trickling printed cutouts of trending styles and memes. By

Intermixing like a Smorgasbord

Postmodernism is a big melting pot, similar to America. Where you can find different cultures, beliefs, ideologies all wrapped up into one. After the first reading the introduction was very clear except for the introduction to Mr. Jean Baudrillard; but the next reading is all about him so that should help. The comparison between hyperreality and Disney World seems a bit dramatic? Why are they putting such a focus on this topic? I understand that Disney provides America with a sort of "Dream Land", but this article puts a negative twist on it for a place that people go to action and get away from their everyday realities.

Am I Colorblind?

Color mutants are among us-- women may have a spare set of x chromosomes can utilize the extra set to create a new yellow cone to create 1000s of new colors. You can look in a DNA test, you can see the gene for the 4th cone. When testing the woman, the showed 2 yellow lights that look the same to us but the lady with the extra chromosome didn't see a difference. But, rarely one of the woman could utilize the extra gene and saw two different colors. So naturally, even I thought twice... was this real, a tetracromat. After hearing about the lady, and the tests in the park it reminded me of when we stared at the white paper in the whitescape video... how we described what we originally labeled white as "a  blue toned white" and the woman did the same thing with the colors presented to her. This whole podcast made me come to the realization that I am color blind in a sense. No, not to the ROYGBIV rainbow but I am to ultraviolet and anything before and after our rainbow... I a

Whitescape

1. Find a white object and place it next to another white object. Compare how the two colors change. I chose the white platform at the bottom of my shoes compared to a white piece of crumpled printer paper. At first, they both appeared "white" but after staring for a while one obviously became duller and softer looking while the piece of paper was more vibrant and bright. 2. Describe the difference in color After further examination, the platforms have more of a warm vanilla tinge while the paper is a cool toned bright white. 3. Change the lighting and take note of how the colors change To change the color I simply put on my iPhone flashlight. The colors appear "purer" if that makes any sense, it may just be my eyes but the whites are both at their purest form. For the shoe i just see how the thin layer of dander and dirt have caused a tinge of warmness and on the paper the light reflected more blue toned to my eyes.
